How tall was Goliath…and David?

David and Goliath is the ultimate (and perhaps original) underdog story, and the theme of numerous leadership books and public relations case studies.

Many people wonder just how tall Goliath was – was he really a giant or just a larger man? What does the Bible say about his size and why does it matter?

According to the Bible, Goliath’s height is described as six cubits and a span (1 Samuel 17:4), which would be around 9 feet, 9 inches (3 meters) assuming a cubit of 18 inches (45 centimeters) and a span of 9 inches (23 centimeters).

That means Goliath by comparison would be almost 3 feet taller than basketball legends Akeem Olajuwon or Shaquille O’Neal.

As for David’s height, the Bible does not provide an exact measurement. However, based on historical averages for the time and place, it is speculated that he was around 5 feet, 10 inches (1.78 meters) tall.

A shepherd boy, armed with nothing but courage, faith, and a sling, slays a fearsome giant with a single stone.

The story of David and Goliath will remain a classic for ages.
